Research Shows that Support for Older People in Australia is Lacking

Published By Newly , 4 years ago

According to Mary Reid, the Interim CEO of Carers Australia, the recently published Flinders University Review of International Systems for Long-term Care of Older People, through the collaboration with Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety is very surprising.

Australia falls behind as compared to other European countries and the United States in various indicators. Services in the country including health are not performing well and staffing levels and nurse workforce are quite low.

In one of the 11 country surveys, Australia just recorded the highest levels of emotionally distressed individuals.

Carers Australia expressed its interest over the statistics showing the support given to family and friend carers. It is pointed out in the report that family and friend carers give a serious contribution to the continuity of aged care. The value of the contribution was over $60 billion in 2015.

However, it should be noted that the available support to these carers in the country is falling behind others.

Although Carer Payment provided by the social security system who are incapable of employment while serving as a carer, support for employed carers is rendered insufficient.

The Fair Work Act provides 10 days of guaranteed leave for Carers if they have been working for an employer for more than a year. But the problem lies in the fact that these 10 days are taken out of their Leave available to all employees, including their sick leave. In contrast to other countries, carers are given extended leave without risking their jobs.

Aside from the possible support outlined above, the report, with its companion piece, Review of Innovative Models of Aged Care forwarded a more flexible provision of aged care services.

Ms. Reid expects that through such a report, the potential areas of improvement are heightened towards the attention of those in power. She added that Carers Australia will continue to advocate changes over the coming year.
