Support Worker Opportunity – St Leonards

Monday to Friday | 10:00am – 6:00pm | Potential for Long-Term Involvement

A unique and rewarding opportunity has become available for an experienced, proactive, and compassionate Support Worker to provide dedicated one-on-one care for a client with complex needs currently undergoing treatment at a public hospital in St Leonards.

This role goes beyond standard support work—it requires someone who genuinely values dignity, communication, and person-centred care, and is committed to providing consistent, high-quality support without shortcuts.

The client’s care journey may progress through various stages, including a transfer to a private hospital, a neuro rehabilitation centre, and eventually a return to their home. This position has the potential to evolve into a long-term care arrangement.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Daily Personal Care

  • Monitor eating and drinking; assist with feeding when needed.

  • Access meals and drinks from the hospital cafeteria as required.

  • Assist with hygiene, grooming, and dressing.

  • Take the client outside in a wheelchair for fresh air and natural light.

2. Routine & Medical Schedule Support

  • Stay informed about the daily medical schedule (scans, appointments, visits).

  • Help prepare and reassure the client ahead of medical interactions.

  • Take notes during staff visits and help explain information in a clear, compassionate manner.

3. Emotional & Social Support

  • Be a steady, respectful presence to help the client feel supported and seen as a person—not just a patient.

  • Greet and accommodate visiting family and friends, while respecting moments of privacy.

  • Coordinate with others involved in the client’s support and wellbeing.

4. Mental & Physical Engagement

  • Support and encourage activities that promote recovery and engagement:

    • Reading (books, news, articles)

    • Playing games (cards, brain-training)

    • Guided meditations (tools provided)

    • Assisting with physiotherapy and exercise repetition

    • Encouraging social interaction (calls, movies, iPad use)

Ideal Candidate:
  • Patient, observant, and proactive

  • Experience in complex or high-needs care

  • Strong communication skills and emotional intelligence

  • Reliable and respectful, with a calm and professional demeanour

  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a broader care team
