Personal Care Worker
People who work in home and community care jobs provide support to the aged, as well people of all ages who live with disabilities or illness. Assistance provided is dependent on the needs and abilities of the client.
Some of the duties include:
- Assisting the client with personal grooming and hygiene
- Domestic duties such as meal preparation, cleaning, laundry and shopping
- Providing companionship which may include travel
- Helping a client pursue hobbies or skills that will help them become more independent
- Providing overnight care as required
- Transportation of clients to social gatherings or appointments
- Coming up with programs to help the clients socialise and stimulate their intellectual and emotional skills
- Administer medicine or help clients self-administer medicine where appropriate
- Provide end of life support and care
- Liaise with other healthcare professionals, colleagues, and family
- Update and maintain client records.
Personal Skills Needed in Personal Care Worker Jobs
Good communication skills are important in personal care since you will be spending a lot of time with the client. You will also need to communicate effectively with the client’s loved ones and other members of the healthcare team.
Other skills include:
- Patience, understanding, and compassion
- Dependability and reliability
- Friendly and positive attitude
- Respecting the client’s privacy and maintaining confidentiality
- Have the ability to carry out domestic duties
- Organisation skills.
Qualifications
Whether you are a high school leaver or looking to change careers, you can apply for home and community care jobs. Personal care worker jobs are fulfilling but also can be challenging.
It is important to have a First Aid certificate and pass all police screening and national checks before you can work with children, the disabled and the aged. Being in possession of Certificate III in Individual support or other relevant VET Qualifications is desirable.
