Working with Anglicare to source residential youth support workers in regional Victoria

Anglicare Victoria is a non-for-profit organisation focused on community development and support for disadvantaged children, young people and families. In early 2016, they had a need for recruitment at their St Luke’s residential program in Bendigo. Despite previous recruitment efforts within the Bendigo community, Anglicare needed to tap into a new pool of experienced workers. Newly’s services were engaged to source, shortlist, assess, and train residential youth support workers within a short time frame.

The Project

The recruitment project required a through screening process to ensure applicant quality and skill, matching the high standards expected from Anglicare’s workforce. Adapting Newly’s tried and tested approach, a bespoke recruitment process was developed closely with the Anglicare team including:

  • Advertising
  • Phone screening 50+ applicants
  • Shortlisting the top 30 applicants
  • An assessment centre for shortlisted candidates
  • Reference checking
  • Training course

To assist in the on-boarding of candidates, the final stage of the process was a two day training course created specifically for the Anglicare youth support worker role. The course was designed to ensure candidates were a good cultural fit for the organisation and to provide the additional skills required to support clients at St Luke’s.

Elizabeth Holley, Director of People, Culture and Community Relations for Anglicare Victoria says:
“The Newly team were committed to delivering results in a tight time frame. We felt that nothing was too much trouble, as they worked with us to attract the right talent. Newly were flexible in their approach, customising existing process to meet our specific requirements. We were very pleased with the results, with nine very good applicants appointed.”

Outcomes

Over a 100 applications were received for the position through job boards, a social media campaign and e-mail direct marketing. Following the thorough screening process nine candidates were matched to the role and subsequently offered positions with Anglicare.

Anglicare Victoria were very pleased with the outcomes of the project and the quality of the candidates put forward, especially given the time limitations and, at Newly, we loved the project and loved working with Anglicare!
