Profile Summary
In 1984/1985 the three services that have now combined to form Disability Advocacy NSW started operations to advocate for people with a disability. ANW commenced in Tamworth, DIAS commenced in Bathurst and a service called Self Advocacy Newcastle began in Newcastle. Self Advocacy Newcastle closed in 1993 and Disability Advocacy Service Hunter (DASH) tendered and took over the funding in 1994. With the amalgamation of DASH and ANW in 2006, DA began to grow and to move into the nearby mid north coast region, opening offices in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Taree. DA also opened a new office in Armidale. DA staff on the mid north coast also played a major role in establishing the Mid North Coast Community Legal Centre in 2011. During this time Advocacy Law Alliance Incorporated was created as the parent organisation for both Disability Advocacy NSW and the Mid North Coast Community Legal Centre which both became registered business names of Advocacy Law Alliance Inc. In 2015 DA expanded its service area to the Hawkesbury-Nepean Region to help people with a disability with the National Disability Insurance Scheme. In 2016 a new office opened in Paramatta to better service this region. In 2016 DA also joined forces with Disability Information and Advocacy Service in Bathurst to provide ongoing advocacy in the Central West of NSW. In 2017 DA established offices in Dubbo and Broken Hill to cover West and Far West NSW.
