Independent Health Care Service Pty Ltd (IHCS) was established in 1992 by a small group of nurses. At the time, they identified that funding restraints on the existing services meant that there were many people living in the community with unmet care needs.

The community's need for trained Support Workers (Carers) along with Registered Nurses was identified, so that a complete package of care could be accessed through a single organisation. This formed the basis of Independent Health Care Service's service delivery.

In order to ensure that the service was truly accessible at all times an after-hours communication system was initiated which enabled clients and organisations to request assistance 24 hours a day, by simply dialing the normal phone number.
