The city is home to one of the top ten producers of lead, copper, silver and zinc in the world. It also has one of Australia’s two largest copper mining and smelter operations. The easiest way to get to Mt Isa is via air. There are direct flights to the city from Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Darwin and the Gold Coast. Queensland Rail operates a passenger service twice a week connecting Mt Isa with Townsville. All the major highways that run to Mt Isa are sealed, but getting there might take you a while – it’s around a 19-and-a-half hour drive from Brisbane with no stops.
