Situated approximately 100 kilometres north of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is the third most-populated area in Queensland. It covers an area of approximately 1,630 square kilometres and spans around 60 kilometres of coastline from Pelican Waters to Tewantin. The region includes cities and towns such as Noosa, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Buderim and Nambour.
The Sunshine Coasts economy has been ranked as the second-highest performing regional economy in Queensland, and is one of the largest regional economies in Australia. Strong and sustainable economic growth is predicted to continue over the next 20 years. Health care and social assistance, construction and the retail trade sectors are the biggest employers in the region.
The city of Maroochydore, with a population of around 48,000 is the largest in the region. The Sunshine Coast has its own university – University of Sunshine Coast, with a campus located at Sippy Downs, 30 minutes away. Maroochydore has great primary and high schools. There are excellent sporting facilities and a thriving arts scene that includes the Maroochydore Music and Visual Arts Festival.
It’s very easy to get to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane. It’s about a 90 minute drive by car. There are regular train services between the two areas as well. The Sunshine Coast airport at Marcoola has daily flights to Sydney and Melbourne.

A new $1.8 billion tertiary teaching hospital is being built at Birtinya, will open in April 2017 with 450 beds, increasing to 783 beds from 2021. There are three other smaller public hospitals in the Sunshine Coast area, and several private hospitals. In Noosa Heads the median house price is $855,000. While in Caloundra it is $535,000. The most affluent suburbs are Birtinya, which has the highest median income, followed by Alexandra Headland, Mons, Sunshine Beach and Coochin Creek.
