If you’re looking for a change of pace, with sunshine, sand, surf, and spectacular landscapes on your doorstep, but don’t want to be too far from the action of city life either, Townsville and Northern Queensland could be a great option.

While there’s no official boundary that separates this region from the rest of the state, it’s generally the area surrounding Townsville – which is sometimes referred to as Queensland’s second capital, some 1300 kilometres north of Brisbane, and includes other major regional centres of Charters Towers, Burdekin, Palm Island and Hinchinbrook. The region features rainforests, sandy beaches, outback bush, the Great Barrier Reef and the benefits of city life.

The economy in the region has been experiencing strong growth and is being bolstered by government investment to create and improve infrastructure. Townsville is a major commercial centre supporting the region’s major industries of agriculture, mining, refining, defence, tourism, transport and education.  Health care and social assistance, public administration and safety and the retail trade sectors are the region’s biggest employers.

Townsville has an estimated population of around 180,000 people.  It has a university as well as several large research institutions. There are numerous primary and secondary schools in Townsville, both public and private. The city boasts a range of sports and leisure facilities that cater to just about ever interest imaginable. There is a thriving arts and culture community with performing arts venues, galleries and museums.

Townsville is about a 15-hour drive from Brisbane. It has an airport with flights in and out to Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, Cairns and Melbourne. Queensland rail’s high speed Tilt Train also services the city.

Healthcare Jobs and Medical Careers in Townsville and Northern QLD

The Townsville Hospital and Health Service has $78.7 million in infrastructure, maintenance and equipment projects underway, including a redevelopment and expansion of the Townsville Hospital children’s ward, a new community health centre on Palm Island and a new 22 bed planned procedure ward at Townsville Hospital.  There are public 18 hospitals and community health campuses and two residential aged care facilities in the area, as well as several private hospitals. Health care and social assistance is the region’s biggest employer, accounting for 13.58 per cent of jobs.

Healthcare professionals in this region are supported by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (PHN). Support networks for health care in the region include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, aged care, domestic violence, diabetes, mental health and disability services.

Median house prices in Townsville are $355,000 and average weekly rents are $360 per week. It’s much more affordable elsewhere in the region, for example median prices at Charters Towers are $125,000.  The most affluent suburbs in Townsville are Castle Hill, which has the highest median income, followed by Townsville City, Murray, Idalia and Bushland Beach.
