Traralgon and the Latrobe Valley are an ideal place to base yourself to make the most of nature-based attractions and  activities in Gippsland.

Located approximately 150 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, the Latrobe Valley is comprised of four major urban centres – Traralgon, Morwell, Churchill and Moe/Newborough. Together these towns make up the fourth-largest population in the state. The region lies between the Strzlecki Ranges in the south and the Baw Baw Ranges in the north.

The region’s economy is mostly based around natural resources – with mining and the energy sector a large employer because of its coal resources. The Latrobe Valley produces around 90 per cent of Victoria’s electricity. Timber processing, paper product manufacturing, agribusiness and tourism are also key to the local economy.

Around 73,929 people live in Traralgon and the Latrobe Valley. Traralgon itself has a population of 24,590. Federation University has a campus at Churchill, and there are many primary and secondary schools, both public and private, in the region. Many cultural and sporting facilities exist, with recreation pursuits from snow skiing and fishing to football and cricket, through to art galleries, musicals, comedy and opera.

Healthcare Jobs and Medical Careers in Traralgon and the Latrobe Valley, VIC

The Latrobe Regional Hospital in Traralgon is one of the region’s biggest employers, treating around 130,000 people every year. It is a teaching hospital closely affiliated with Monash University’s School of Rural Health and Federation University. Smaller hospitals, both public and private, are found elsewhere in the region.  The healthcare and social assistance sector is the biggest source of employment, accounting for 13.3% of local jobs

The Gippsland Primary Health Network (PHN) supports health professionals in the region. Support networks for this region include indigenous, maternal health, diabetes management, immunisation, mental health and alcohol and other drugs.

The median house price in Traralgon is more affordable than Melbourne at $270,000 while the average rent is $290 per week.  In Moe, the median house price is $177,500 and average weekly rent is $220.

Traralgon is approximately an hour and a half drive from central Melbourne and less than two hours from Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport.  An hourly rail service operates between Melbourne and Traralgon.
